Mrs. Richards' Reports

In Literacy, we have been learning about making an inference using books, poems, pictures, and actions. The children are catching on and using the vocabulary, "I infer...."

In Writer's Workshop, the children have been writing how to booklets and information about something or someone that they know a lot about.  In Math, we are working on finding the missing addend using a number line and by using cubes to count up. We will be working on subtraction and learning what a fact family is. The children spend 20 minutes three times a week on Dreambox during math.

For our Inquiry about Force and Motion, the children are learning about some forces that can move matter: push, pull, carry, and roll. They are doing a variety of hands on activities learning about these forces

Friday was National P.I.E. Day so we celebrated by learning what this math symbol stands for. Congratulations goes out to Maksim Kan with the highest MAPS winter math score, and to Gabe Coons for the most improved score.  They each received a certificate and coupon to Baker's Square. Way to go boys!

Quarter 3 conferences are coming up on Tuesday March 25 from 4:30-8pm.  These conferences are by teacher request. Of course, if you want to attend to talk about your child's progress, please contact me.

Our new Inquiry Unit that we started this week is on Force and Motion. We are learning about the 3 kinds of matter: solid, liquid, and gas, and how they move. For this inquiry, we are having Story's grandpa come into our classroom on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon to do hands on experiments with the children. He is a retired middle school science teacher. They fondly call him "grandpa"!  The children are learning a lot and are having a great time with the experiments.

Mrs. Richards Reports from Room 137

Read Across America began on Monday. We had fun all week learning about Dr. Seuss and reading many of his books. The children enjoy all the rhymes!

Next Tuesday, we attend the Milwaukee Symphony concert to go with our ACE program. We have spent a lot of time listening to the music and interacting with it. For the Carnival of the animals, the children moved about the room first as elephants and then as birds. We are ready for this concert experience. I suggested to the children on Friday that they dress nicely for the symphony.

We have been learning about George Washington and Abe Lincoln. We had a visit from Abe on Friday. The children were able to share their new learning with him.

Our Art Museum field trip was a huge success. The children enjoyed creating sculptures depicting a season on their canvas using a variety of materials like model magic clay, stones, Popsicle sticks, and paint. They viewed a variety of art work in the galleries showing the seasons. The children made great connections between the art work and the seasons.

On Monday, we kick off the week with Read Across America by celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. We will have a guest reader, do a goldfish graph, and some writing activities. We will celebrate with cupcakes and juice. Here are some pictures from our field trip to the Art Museum. Great connections to our ACE project!

On our 100th. Day, we celebrated with sharing our projects, making crowns, and by doing some counting, graphing, and writing activities.

On Wednesday, we will be going to the Art Museum. The children will be working with different colors and materials to create seasonal works of art. We are connecting this to the  ACE Program. The children will also take a tour with a docent. Please send a cold lunch to eat when we return to school. We are really looking forward to this experience. We have been learning and moving to the ACE music. Please send an empty paper towel roll so we can make rain sticks.

We have an exciting week ahead! Here are some of the important details!

****  Pettit Ice Skating is Wednesday morning. We leave school at 9:30 and return by noon.
Please send 2 SNACKS..... one to eat at the Pettit and one for the afternoon. The children need to dress warm because it is cold in the Pettit. Be sure to have longer socks on that go up the leg and really cover the ankles so your feet won't hurt. We will be back to school in time for hot lunch so you can still buy your lunch if you want.

****  Valentine's Day Celebration will be on Thursday. Please have your shoe box/empty tissue box at school by Wednesday. We are going to enjoy decorating them in the afternoon.  Don't forget your valentines on Thursday.

****  No Home and Back bags until next week. Your homework is writing valentines and completing the 100 Day project.

****  We are going to make a 100 Day Trail Mix snack for the 100th. Day which is Tuesday Feb. 18th.
I will send a note home explaining this snack.
